Carbs Are Not The Enemy!

Let’s Talk about Carbs! 🥔

We often hear that carbs are bad and should be avoided, particularly when working towards a goal like weight loss. This is a myth! ❌

Carbohydrates are one of the three main macronutrients, along with protein and fats, that your body requires daily to promote a well-balanced diet and healthy body.

Carbs are your body’s main source of energy as they provide the body with glucose, which is converted to energy and used to fuel the brain, kidneys, heart muscles, and central nervous system. ✅

While consuming carbohydrates has many benefits, it is important to assess the quality of the carb. The healthiest and most nutrient-dense sources of carbohydrates are unprocessed or minimally processed whole grains like oats and rice, fruit and vegetables such as pumpkin and sweet potato, and legumes like beans and lentils.

It is recommended that you limit carbohydrate sources with added sugars and refined grains, such as sugary drinks and desserts, as they are high in calories but low in nutritional value and will not provide you with the same benefits as the healthier alternative. 🙌

If you are struggling to lose weight, try this exercise to see if you can highlight any issues that could be causing this.

  • Track your food for 1 week using a food journal or standing notebook
  • Separate your food into 5 different columns – Protein, fats, carbs. greens, liquids
  • Now review the data. Which of these columns is full? Which is empty? For most people who struggle with weight loss, the carb column will be full while the others are lacking
  • What is the quality of the carbs you are consuming? Look back on this article and determine if you are consuming good-quality carbohydrates or not
